Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 05-12 September 2025 — The ANC has taken part in the ITU-MCMC BSG Workshop on Artificial Intelligence Standards for Increasing the Efficiency of Telecommunications and ICTs, held in Kuala Lumpur from 5 to 12 September 2025. The event was organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in collaboration with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), with support from regional partners.
The workshop brought together policymakers, regulators, and technical experts from across the Asia-Pacific to strengthen understanding of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, ethics, and international standards, with a particular focus on capacity building for Least Developed Countries (LDCs), Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs), and Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
Representing Timor-Leste, Mr. Fábio de Magalhães and Mr. Domingos Moniz, Technical Regulators at the Autoridade Nacional de Comunicações (ANC), actively contributed to discussions on the role of AI in driving digital transformation.
As part of the country presentations on AI developments and capacity needs, with contributions from Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei Darussalam, Thailand, Laos, Pakistan, Mongolia, and Timor-Leste, Mr. Fábio de Magalhães presented an overview of Timor-Leste’s current AI initiatives, future plans, and priority areas for capacity building. He emphasized the importance of partnerships, skills development, and policy frameworks to ensure AI can accelerate national progress.
The workshop concluded with a site visit to the MY5G Portal, where participants explored practical AI applications in telecommunications. The visit highlighted both network-side innovations—from the evolution of 1G to 5G, showcasing high-speed, low-latency, and enhanced connectivity—and real-world applications, including smart homes, immersive media, cloud gaming, smart surveillance, connected enterprises, and mission-critical communications.
Timor-Leste’s active participation underscores its commitment to advancing digital transformation and ensuring that emerging technologies such as AI are adopted responsibly, inclusively, and in line with international best practices.
